First things first: What’s the difference between gyros and shawarma?
It’s not just the name.
While Turkish döner (and Middle Eastern shawarma) often come with hummus or tahini, the Greek version – gyros – is all about that tzatziki.

💥 The vegan version that stole my heart
I recently tried the vegan gyros at Goodness and couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Naturally, I had to recreate it at home – and oh my, it worked!
Instead of lamb, veal or turkey:
👉 Shredded Redefine (or any plant-based meat) sautéed with spices, caramelized onion, and garlic.
Instead of hummus or tahini:
👉 Creamy vegan tzatziki that brings tang, freshness, and balance.

🥙 How to build the perfect Greek-style wrap:
- Spread a generous layer of vegan tzatziki on a warm pita
- Add halved cherry tomatoes and sliced hot peppers
- Sprinkle with fresh arugula leaves
- Top with the seasoned shredded plant-based meat
- Add crispy fries
- Roll it up – and serve with more tzatziki on the side!

Crunchy, juicy, creamy, tangy – this wrap brings sunshine to your plate, no matter where you are.


RECIPE
Vegan Gyros- 2-3 Tablespoon olive oil
- 300 gram vegan redefine pulled beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon Shawarma Seasoning Blend
- ½ teaspoon Ras El Hannut
- salt and pepper to taste
To Serve
- 4 Pita wraps or large Tortilla
- vegan tzatziki
- 12-15 Cherry tomatoes cut lengthwise
- Green or red chili pepper cut into rings
- Rocket leaves
- French fries
- Pour the oil into a large skillet or a wok, add the onion, and sauté over medium-low heat until the onion is caramelized. Add the minced garlic and stir-fry for a few seconds.
- Add the vegan pulled meat, incorporate the spices, and sauté for a few minutes.
To Serve
- Warm the pita wraps or tortillas in a dry skillet or in the microwave
- Spread tzatziki on the pita, leaving the edges clean. Scatter halved cherry tomatoes, hot peppers, and rocket leaves on top. Add the vegan pulled meat and fries.
- Roll up the pita and serve with a small bowl of tzatziki.
