The store-bought Lady Fingers is inferior to the one you make at home!
In the pre-vegan period, when I would dip the purchased Lady Fingers in coffee a few seconds longer, they would become soggy and lose shape. And the funniest thing – I thought that’s how Lady Fingers are supposed to behave in tiramisu!
So, I accepted the challenge and made vegan Lady Fingers at home! They turned out incredibly spongy and maintained their shape after being dipped in liquid.
And so, when I passed the vegan Lady Fingers test, I turned to making a vegan tiramisu that pays homage to the original!
If you are wondering what you can make with Tofutti, then let me tell you it’s the perfect substitute for mascarpone, one of the essential ingredients in Tiramisu.
All that is needed is to whip the tofu with sugar, vanilla extract, and orange peel extract. Whip vegan whipping cream (like Flora) and combine the mixtures.
Dip the ladyfingers in strong espresso, line a deep rectangular pan with them, about 25 x 20 cm in size, pour a little more espresso on top, spread half of the cream mixture, sprinkle cocoa powder with a small strainer, and repeat – easy!
Keep covered in the refrigerator for at least a day before devouring – to allow the tiramisu to set and the flavors to blend. In general – like good wine, the tiramisu gets better with time – after a week, it will taste like heaven (trust me😋)
In his book “Aharoni Opens a Table” on which this recipe is based, Aharoni recommends diversifying the classic version with berries, shaved chocolate, and crushed praline. I recommend starting with the classic version and continuing with variations according to taste.
Enjoy, and let me know how it turned out 🙏❣
